Bogolan or Bògòlanfini is a handmade cotton fabric from Mali, traditionally dyed with fermented mud.
Locally grown cotton is woven on narrow looms and the strips of fabric are sewn together.
The fabric is then dyed in a solution of crushed, boiled leaves and dried in the sun.
The fabric is then decorated with mud, which is collected from riverbeds and left to ferment for up to a year in clay jars.
Multiple painting steps are essential to achieve deeper shades, along with bleaching and fixing processes.
